RV Garage Dimensions – We Build to Suit!

Why pay for offsite storage of your RV, motorhome, fifth wheel, or pull-behind camper when installing a new RV garage on your own property is both more convenient AND more cost-effective? The average RV width (unextended) is 10’W or less, and our RV garage sizing starts at 12’W. Want to go wider with your RV garage to allow for extra storage space? Not a problem. We can suit whatever length or height requirement you may have, too. We’ve got RV garage designs which are perfect for Class A, Class B, and Class C motorhomes, or for any other type of RV you may need to shelter and protect.

American Metal Buildings

Height considerations

Most RV and other tall profile vehicle owners are well-aware that knowing your vehicle’s exact height is crucial whenever it comes to navigating underneath bridges and tunnels. Standard Class A RVs and Class C motorhomes have an average height of 10 feet, while Class B motorhomes average between 7-9 feet tall. We can provide a metal RV cover with 12 feet of clearance, and can go even taller if that’s what you need. Of course, we can suit your building width and length needs, too.

American Metal Buildings

Width considerations

Standard carport or garage width – including RV covers – starts at 12 feet. But an RV with slideouts fully extended could require a minimum building width of 18 feet. Another thing to keep in mind is how much space you’ll need to navigate around your RV whenever doing any prep work, cleaning, or routine RV maintenance. For these purposes, it’s a good idea to build in some extra wiggle room in terms of building width. The wider the building design you choose, the more protected storage and workspace you’ll have at your disposal.

American Metal Buildings

Length considerations

Most metal carports and garages start at a standard minimum length of 21 feet, which can typically be increased in 5-feet increments. A truck camper or pull-behind camper can run anywhere from 16’ to 23’ in length, while larger travel trailers or 5th wheels can reach up to 35’ in length. A Class A motorhome can range between 34’-44’, while a full-size conversion bus can reach 45’ in length. The good news? American Metal Buildings can build your RV garage to practically any length you desire, including building in enough space for a bike, canopy, tool storage, and more!

Popular RV Garage Sizes

Trying to decide which RV garage size will suit your needs best? Here are some of the most popular RV garage styles we see at American Metal Buildings:

12×26 RV Garage

A 12’x26’ RV garage can be used to protect a truck camper, light trailer, or class B motorhome. This is one of the smallest RV garage designs, but it may be a great fit for your compact RV. Plus, the galvanized steel construction offers sure protection for your special ride.

18x41 RV Garage

Maybe you need a shelter that’s a little wider than standard, but also plenty long and tall to meet your RV coverage needs. An 18’x41’ RV garage from American Metal Buildings could really be your perfect solution! It’s tall enough to accommodate your RV, and it’s also long enough to potentially offer some additional storage space.

24x41 RV Garage

Parked fifth-wheel and pull-behind campers need protection from the elements just like cars and trucks do, but they’re generally too big to be able to fit inside a standard garage. But don’t fret! American Metal Buildings can provide you with a 24’x41’ RV garage that’s wide enough, long enough, and tall enough to meet your needs!

30x51 RV Garage

Got a larger motorhome you need to keep in a protected shelter whenever you’re not using it? Consider going with one of our 30’x51’ RV garages. It’s well-designed for accommodating practically any RV or camper, while also being wide enough to allow ample space for needed RV prep and maintenance.

40×61 RV Garage

Maybe what you really need is a large, multipurpose garage. The 40’x61’ RV garage design gives ample space for parking your mobile residence driving machine, while also including some built-in space for storing bicycles, recreational equipment, lawn equipment, or whatever else you may need to store inside a well-protected garage.

Customization Options for RV Garages

Looking for some good ways to customize your RV garage? At American Metal Buildings, we offer you hundreds of possible customization combinations! We’re here to help you get the exact metal building you need – you decide everything from building size, to roof style, to colors & trim, and more.

  • SIZE

How big do you want it? How big do you need it? We can build a metal RV garage to suit any width, length, and height requirements. Size is really no object for us at American Metal Buildings!

  • Roof Style

While a regular roof can be a good solution for smaller metal buildings, it usually isn’t the best solution for an RV garage application. Your best roof options are the A-frame horizontal roof and the vertical roof. Both look similar from the outside, but a vertical roof features extra reinforcements and vertical paneling.

  • Colors

When it comes to color combinations, you’ve got options there too. You can choose separate colors for the roof, side paneling, and trim if you prefer, and can make your RV garage blend in with other surrounding structures any way you like.

  • Doors & Windows

We can install one or more roll-up doors that are perfectly sized for RV entry and exit. We also can provide walk-in doors for more convenient points of entry, and can place windows essentially wherever you want them around your RV garage.

  • Anchors

What type of foundation will you be using for your RV garage? At American Metal Buildings, it’s really up to you. We can install on concrete, asphalt, gravel, even plain level ground, and can secure your building with concrete anchors, asphalt anchors, rebar anchors, and/or mobile home anchors.

  • 12- and 14-Gauge Steel Framing

14-gauge is the standard for general usage metal building framing, and we’re happy to build your RV garage with 14-gauge steel tubing. But if you’re looking for something even more sturdy, you can also upgrade to a thicker 12-gauge, if you prefer.

  • 26- and 29-Gauge Metal Paneling

29-gauge is a standard thickness for roof and sidewall metal paneling, and we also use that as a default for RV garages. But you aren’t just limited to that. You can also upgrade to a thicker 26-gauge paneling which is better engineered for handling extreme weather or other heavy-duty usages.

  • Certification

What does building certification mean? It simply means that your RV garage has been designed by a professional engineer, and is rated to meet certain minimum wind and snow loads. If certification is a requirement in your area, we’ve got you covered at American Metal Buildings.

Application Possibilities for a Metal RV Garage

Obviously, you can use a metal RV garage to park and protect your RV, but there are many other ways you can make use of a custom RV garage, as well.

Agriculture & Farm
Use

The size and design of an RV garage work well for many farm & agricultural applications. Need to park your tractor, combine, or attachments? An RV garage can be used to accommodate those needs. Need to keep crops, feed, or seed in dry storage? A metal RV garage works well for that, too.

Barn for Horses or Livestock

Large metal buildings make great carports or garages, but they make great functional barns, too. You can turn your RV garage into a horse barn, hay barn, or shelter for housing all sorts of animals, livestock, and poultry, or for use as a breeding or production facility.

Commercial
Building

Looking for a place to house your auto repair shop or other commercial facilities? A metal RV garage can meet those needs. It can even be adapted to use as a storefront or other retail space. Honestly, the only limit to the possibilities is your imagination.

Industrial Building

Got some industrial equipment to store? Or perhaps you need a place where you can actually install and use industrial equipment for manufacturing, production, or other purposes. Well, we’ve got good news – steel tubing structures from American Metal Buildings can be engineered to perform well in practically any industrial environment.

Finished Residential Space

Can a metal structure actually be turned into a finished residential home? Yes, it can! Metal barns make great barndominiums, and metal buildings really can be turned into some great living spaces. Steel-framed homes can be much more cost-effective than stick builds, and they’re better engineered for withstanding weather extremes, too.

Why Choose a Steel RV Garage?

What’s better about steel RV garages? Practically everything you can think of. Steel is strong, rugged, reliable, and can even be significantly cheaper to build with than wood. When it comes to using steel as a construction material, there’s honestly no downside. Here are just a few reasons you should choose steel for your RV garage:

  • Reliable Protection from the Elements – The main point of having your own steel garage is to be able to protect your RV from UV exposure, precipitation, and wind dangers. And for these purposes, a steel RV garage really delivers!
  • Protect Your RV from Other Threats, Too – A steel RV garage does much more than just shield your RV from sun & rain; it’s also incredibly fire-resistant, pest-resistant, mold-resistant, lightning-resistant, and even more earthquake-resistant than comparable structures.
  • Built to Last – Steel is a much stronger and more durable material than wood. Why choose a wooden RV garage, when you can have a much better building solution?
  • Design & Application Flexibility – Your steel garage can be used for more than just RV protection. The completely customizable & flexible design of a steel structure presents a multitude of helpful usage possibilities.
  • More Available Space for Insulation – The minimum of space required for steel framing materials also means there is more attic and wall cavity space available to fill with insulation. If you’re interested in creating a climate-controlled environment for your personal RV storage, a metal RV garage is really your best solution.
  • Little Required Maintenance – The last thing you probably need is a storage building which requires a lot of maintenance. Steel RV garages need practically no ongoing maintenance, and are very simple to clean inside and out.

Site Preparation for an RV Garage

Once you’ve placed your order for your RV garage metal building, there are just a few things you’ll need to do to make sure your site is ready for install.

Decide the install location

Where do you want to place the RV garage on your property? The first thing you’ll need to do is decide your exact building installation site.

Obtain building permits, if needed

Are building permits required in your area? The best way to find out what you need to do permit-wise is to check with your local municipal or county building authority. If any building permits are needed for your RV garage, you’ll need to go ahead and obtain those before we can proceed with the installation.

Clear the site of brush and debris

If there is any vegetation, trash, or debris on your intended installation site, you’ll need to go ahead and get that cleared, so our installation crews will have plenty of clear space in which to work.

Ensure the site is level

Making sure your site is level will ensure that your metal building is better able to withstand both time and elements, with building weight distributed evenly across all supports. Any groundwork needed to get your site level will need to be completed prior to the building install date.

Mark any utility lines

Do you have any existing buried utilities, do you intend to run utilities to your RV garage? In either case, it’s important to make sure any utility lines are clearly marked before our install crews arrive.

Prepare the foundation

If you intend to have your building installed on a concrete or asphalt surface, you’ll need to get the foundation poured and cured before we arrive to put up your RV garage. For gravel or soil installation sites, all you’ll need to do beforehand is to make sure the site is level and clear.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Garages

Got some more questions? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions we receive about RV garages at American Metal Buildings:

Absolutely, yes. There’s really no better outdoor structure for protecting RVs, motorhomes, campers, buses, boats, jet skis, or any other type of recreational vehicle. A steel structure from American Metal Buildings is much tougher and more reliable than other comparable building solutions. And don’t let the term “prefab” bother you, either. Prefab just means that your metal building components have been precision fabricated in a dedicated manufacturing facility ahead of time. This construction approach makes building installation go much faster, more smoothly, and with less opportunity for foul-ups on site.

American Metal Buildings wants you to get the exact metal RV garage you need, so we give you plenty of customization options. You choose the building size & dimensions, roof style, colors, trim options, and more. We’ve got many roll-up doors, walk-in doors, and window sizes and options to choose from, too. You can get your perfect RV garage with American Metal Buildings!

No matter how big your RV, motorhome, or camper is, American Metal Buildings can provide a custom metal building to suit your needs! We design and install metal structures of all sizes & shapes, for whatever application you have in mind. Need some extra storage space? We can accommodate that, too. Need more help in choosing the best building size for parking and protecting your RV? Just get in touch!

More than likely, yes. That will really depend upon what specific building codes apply in your desired installation location. The best way to achieve clarity is to reach out to your local building authority and share your planned building details with them. But if any building permits are in fact required, you’ll just need to have those in hand before we can proceed with your building install.

Indeed, you can! At American Metal Buildings, we’re about providing great custom metal structures, but we don’t just stop there.
